Hello Sunshine: Think Globally, Act Locally – Learn about SDGs & our Earth Month Initiative!

We’re pleased to share that as we celebrate Earth Month, we are also reflecting on our organization’s mission and how it connects to our world’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our theme during this celebration is Hello Sunshine: Think Globally, Act Locally, which we believe is an invitation to a better future.

As a faith-based nonprofit, one of our core values is to be Stewards of Life. Part of being a good Steward of Life means being a good steward of our planet’s resources. All month, we will be spotlighting our communities and residents who are making a difference—working locally with a mind toward our global environment.

Sustainability and Community Investment

At its most basic, “sustainability” means living within the resources of the planet without damaging the environment, now or in the future. To help foster sustainability, the United Nations adopted 17 “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs) in 2015 to make our world more prosperous, inclusive, sustainable and resilient.

This year, the UN is focusing on the SDG of “Zero Hunger”—an effort to achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. This speaks to us at Bethesda Senior Living Communities because for nearly 60 years, we have been serving seniors by enriching their physical, emotional and spiritual health in our intimate communities. At the same time, we have been investing profits into our ministry to support people around the globe.

As a testament to our community service, last year we invested $1.1 million to organizations ranging from Meals on Wheels to local Food Banks. At the same time, we support One Child Matters, which helps nearly 40,000 hungry children in 15 countries around the world. This is all part of our effort to Serve Locally, Serve Globally.

Join Us in Building a Sustainable Future

In addition to our organization’s service around the globe, our residents are taking matters into their own hands, planting gardens around our communities. We’re exciting by the positive energy around Earth Month, and we invite you to join us in celebrating sustainability and service.
